This joint can be undone with gentle heating.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fans of PVC pipe know that once a PVC joint is cemented together, it is impossible to take apart without destroying the pieces. Until now. The formula is simple:<\/p>\n<p>PVC + Polycaprolactone = Awesome<\/p>\n<p>Poly-capro-what you say? You can read <a href=\" http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/more-about-polycaprolactone\/\">More about Polycaprolactone<\/a> aka PCL <a href=\" http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/more-about-polycaprolactone\/\">here<\/a>.  The awesomeness of PCL is well documented by Make Magazine in their article <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.makezine.com\/2011\/09\/28\/the-many-uses-of-shapelock\/\">The Many Uses of Shapelock<\/a>, but I have discovered one important use that they missed!<\/p>\n<p><noscript>&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;A HREF=&#8221;http:\/\/ws.amazon.com\/widgets\/q?rt=ss_ssw&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;ID=V20070822%2FUS%2Fwatersto-20%2F8003%2F9f3d57de-0b37-4943-8173-bbe63a76d04c&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;Operation=NoScript&#8221;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Amazon.com Widgets&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;\/A&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;<\/noscript>While trying to use a bit of PVC as a mold for PCL, I was quite displeased to discover that the PCL instantly bonded to the PVC like pine sap on glass. The PCL stayed pliable, and could be scraped off with great effort, but it really, really wanted to stay put on the PVC. And once cooled and hardened, the two couldn&#8217;t be separated at all, even with pliers, screwdriver or hammer.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_56\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8497.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-56\" title=\"Stuck!\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8497-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8497-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8497-1024x680.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-56\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">When PVC meets melted PCL, the result is sticky<\/p><\/div>\n<p>My displeasure at the failed experiment was short lived when I realized the many implications of this happy accident, which I summarize with a simple photograph.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8028.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-47\" title=\"PVC + PCL = Awesome\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8028-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8028-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8028-1024x680.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-47\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two PVC pipes semi-permanently joined with a ball of low-melting point polycaprolactone plastic<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As you can see, the putty like nature of the PCL combined with its adhesion to PVC allows for some very non-standard \u00a0joints. \u00a0 I also found, as you can see below, that it works very well on traditional joints that need to be strong, yet not permanent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recipe for making\u00a0reversible, semi-permanent PVC glue joints<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>0) Acquire Polycaprolactone.   List of <a href=\" http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/more-about-polycaprolactone\/#wheretobuy\">places to buy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>1) Heat beads of PCL in very hot water until clear and putty-like, then form into an O-ring like shape<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_49\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8491.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49\" title=\"Ready to join\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8491-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8491-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8491-1024x680.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-49\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A ring of PCL ready to glue two pieces of PVC together<\/p><\/div>\n<p>2) Stick the o-ring onto the male side of the joint. \u00a0Pre-warming the PVC with very hot water will ensure a good bond and keep the PCL from cooling too quickly.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_50\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8492.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-50\" title=\"PCL O-Ring\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8492-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"PCL O-Ring\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8492-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8492-1024x680.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-50\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The PCL O-Ring has been attached to the male side of the joint. When pressed together, some will be forced into the gap, and the excess will squeeze out.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>3) Press the fittings together and wait for the PCL to cool<\/p>\n<p>Once cool, the result is nearly as strong as a cemented joint. For extra strength, you can CAREFULLY pour near-boiling water over the entire assembly after the joint is pressed together to ensure a good bond.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8493.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-52\" title=\"Finished Joint\" src=\"http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8493-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8493-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.waters.to\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/DSC_8493-1024x680.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-52\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Finished joint is watertight, nearly as strong as cement, and can be undone by gently heating<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If you ever need to take the joint apart, (gently!) heat the joint under hot water and pull the fitting apart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some thoughts on safety<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although this should go without saying, I&#8217;ll say it anyway:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; be careful around hot water<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; heating plastic with a heat gun or hair dryer is a bad idea due to fire risk<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; joints formed with this technique are neither suitable nor advisable for any plumbing application<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; joints formed with this technique may unintentionally come apart if heated (duh)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Have fun and be safe!<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fans of PVC pipe know that once a PVC joint is cemented together, it is impossible to take apart without destroying the pieces.
